The first weekend of May is in the books, and while it may not be the busiest time of the year, there’s still a ton of action in the Big 12 Conference. I am rolling out this weekly Monday feature for the first time, as it gives you a chance to quickly look back on the weekend that was, and catch up on what you missed across the conference. Please let me know what you think of this column by commenting on the Heartland College Sports forums.
1. TCU Manager Goes Viral
TCU manager Kirk Saarloos went viral over the weekend. He was ejected from TCU’s game on Saturday and then decided to take his briefcase and walk around the field.
TCU lost the game 9-2 vs. Oklahoma State and Saturday and got swept in the process, dropping Friday’s game 7-6 and Sunday’s game 11-10. It’s been a rough season for the Horned Frogs, and Saarloos had clearly had enough on Saturday.
2. Brendan Sorsby’s Big Legal Hire
Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who is now beginning his fight to regain eligibility following his gambling scandal that shook the college football world, has retained the services of notable attorney Jeffrey Kessler.
Kessler was the lead attorney in the landmark House vs. NCAA case, which was approved last June. The settlement ushered in the revenue-sharing era of college sports. Beginning on July 1 of last year, schools were able to share $20.5 million with athletes. The amount shared in revenue will increase annually.
If Sorsby is unable to regain eligibility, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Sorsby could enter the NFL’s Supplemental Draft. No player has been selected in an NFL Supplemental Draft since 2019.
2. Big 12 Softball Season Wraps Up
The Big 12 Softball Tournament is set after the results of the final three games of regular season action ended on Sunday. Seeding came down to the final day because the four teams vying for the top four seeds behind Texas Tech were still in action. UCF defeated Iowa State, Arizona lost to Utah and Oklahoma State beat Kansas.
Only the top eight teams in the conference standings advance to the Big 12 Tournament. Iowa State, BYU and Houston were left out of the field based on finishing outside the top eight.
