There are just a couple of weekends left in college baseball’s conference play. While there are still some big games ahead, I thought it would be a good time to start looking at the postseason picture. It’s been a week since I last updated the postseason picture, but here are the Big 12 teams who are projected to make the field of 64 according to D1Baseball.
Regional Host
Kansas (7)
The Jayhawks remain the lone Big 12 team to host a regional. Last week they were at seven, and they stayed there once again this week. Sitting at 20-4 in conference play and with an upcoming series against West Virginia, Kansas has a chance to clinch a regular-season Big 12 title for the first time since 1949. If they win this series, then they will be a regional host no matter what happens moving forward.
Teams That Are In the Field of 64
West Virginia (2)
The top-two seed in the Big 12 belongs to West Virginia, but not by much, as they are just one spot ahead of the next team. Sadly, there’s really no path for the Mountaineers to grab a regional spot unless they win out and win the Big 12 tournament, which is a big ask. However, they are still a two-seed, which is perfectly fine for now.
Arizona State (2)
Right behind West Virginia is Arizona State, which is playing some of its best baseball of the season right now. The Sun Devils are third in the conference standings with a 16-8 record. They do get a shot at Kansas next weekend and could potentially make things interesting down the stretch. The one thing working against them is their RPI, which is at 40.
Oklahoma State (2)
In the last two weeks, Oklahoma State has shot up the rankings and has found itself as a solid two seed. Their RPI is in the top 35, which is great, but they are still two games behind both West Virginia and Arizona State. There was a time when I was worried about them, but now it appears that they will get in if they can just win a couple more games.
Cincinnati (2)
Despite having the worst record out of all the two seeds from the Big 12, D1Baseball has had a soft spot for Cincinnati for a while. The Bearcats are just 13-11 in conference play, but their RPI is what is helping them. Right now, Cincinnati’s RPI is inside the top 25 and is only behind one other Big 12 team (Kansas). However, they do need to stack up a few more wins to secure a two seed.
UCF (2)
Wrapping up the two seeds for the Big 12 is UCF. At one point, they were a team with a legitimate chance to host, but then they cooled off a bit. Just like the teams ahead of them (outside of Arizona State), they have a top-35 RPI but are fourth in the Big 12 standings at 15-9. It’s important that they take care of business in the final two weeks to avoid falling to a three seed.
TCU (3)
We finish up the list with the TCU Horned Frogs, who are the only projected three-seed from the Big 12. TCU is 13-11 right now, which is ok but out of all the teams on this list, they have the worst RPI (51), which doesn’t make me feel very safe. In fact, D1Baseball has them as one of the last four teams, which is a dangerous place to be with little time left.
