Report: BYU Player Stepping Away from Football For Good

NCAA Football: Central Florida at Brigham Young

BYU has another opening at wide receiver, as junior Cody Hagen, who was set to return for the 2026 season, will medically retire from football and leave the team, according to multiple reports on Friday morning.

The decision follows a knee injury that followed Hagen out of BYU’s 25-21 win over Georgia Tech in the Pop-Tarts Bowl last year. It’s a substantial blow to the Cougars depth-wise at the receiver spot. Hagen returned the most experience behind Parker Kingston, who was dismissed by the program earlier this offseason.

Hagen, a junior-to-be from Draper, Utah, recorded 97 yards on 12 receptions last season, including another 93 rushing yards (10.3 yards per carry) and two touchdowns on the ground. Hagen carried the ball 32 yards for a touchdown at Colorado last fall.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE COUGARS AT WR?

With Hagen out of the picture, BYU’s receiver room thins down to six names with limited-to-no college experience.

Jojo Phillips and Tiger Bachmeier return 14 catches or fewer; Oregon transfer Kyle Kasper comes to BYU after recording just six catches for 77 yards in four seasons as a Fighting Duck. Reggie Frischknecht accepted an offer to join the Cougars as a redshirt sophomore following two seasons at Weber State and two-year Snow College.

Three-star wideout prospect Legend Glasker will also have an opportunity for snaps this fall. The Lehi, Utah, native turned down competing offers by Kansas State, Utah, Cal, Colorado State and Utah State to stay near home. Glasker, a two-time All-State MVP, recorded 676 receiving yards for nine touchdowns, and another 206 rushing yards on 11 carries as a senior at Lehi High School.
