Rich Rodriguez and West Virginia football just flipped a Matt Campbell commit.
Central Catholic cornerback Zachary Gleason Jr. just switched his commitment from Penn State to West Virginia on Thursday after committing to Campbell and the Nittany Lions earlier this year.
Gleason, a 6-foot-10, 170-pound three-star prospect from Pittsburgh, becomes Rodriguez’s 15th commitment in the Class of 2027, and a major pickup for the Mountaineer secondary.
Just a few days earlier, Gleason posted a Penn State-themed edit after visiting campus on June 5. Rodriguez and the Mountaineers officially offered the local star in an effort to fend off his offers from Campbell, Kentucky, Stanford, Cincinnati, Michigan State, among others.
West Virginia ultimately won out, and Gleason, with another season of high school football still to play out, is saddled with Rodriguez and the Mountaineers for the time being. There’s plenty of time for Gleason to reverse or decommit, but the offer must be tempting considering the opportunity to represent his home state for a program like Penn State in the Big Ten.
In West Virginia, though, Gleason could make an immediate impact as Rodriguez tries to guide the Mountaineers back into relevancy. The Mountaineers are currently ranked fourth overall across the Big 12 in the Class of 2027.
