With SEC Media Days kicking off on Monday, much of the attention turned to the comments made by commissioner Greg Sankey, who spoke about the idea of the SEC breaking away from the NCAA. Sankey said, “They’re real. The frustrations (for some) that bring them to the point of saying we should look at something significantly different.”
Well, now, ESPN reporter Heather Dinich has followed up on Sankey’s comments, with some of her own reporting, noting that, “It’s very real. And this is something that has been going on for months.” She noted the Presidents and Chancellors have been talking about this for months, if they cannot get federal legislation.

Brendan Sorsby and the Big 12
What’s fascinating is how the SEC is using the Bredan Sorsby situation as a reason for why they need to break away, despite the fact that Sorsby is going to end up not playing a single snap for Texas Tech this season. It’s all excuses. The SEC wrote the book on how to avoid getting in trouble with the NCAA and skirting the rules, but now they’re outraged that the NCAA has no teeth to its rules and regulations? I may have been born at night, but it wasn’t last night.
And when the SEC talks about needing federal legislation, what they really mean is federal legislation that they approve of, on their terms. That’s it. It’s all a leverage play by the SEC to try and muscle through what it wants in the Protect Colleg Sports Act. And that’s fine for them to do. Everyone should lobby on their behalf. But to suggest they will break away, and then use ESPN to promote its nonsense? Please. We can all see what’s going on here.
