A passionate start to DJ Lagway‘s Big 12 career is slowly dissolving as the Baylor Bears are “doubtful” the Florida quarterback transfer will be available for Saturday’s home game against Louisiana Tech, according to a new report by Pete Thamel.
Lagway endured an ankle injury during Baylor’s 17-16 Auburn loss in Atlanta. Nate Bennett is the starter again this week after taking the field in place of Lagway last week for a 44-3 home win over Prairie View A&M; The junior backup threw for 314 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions against the Panthers, which managed a dismal 110 yards of total offense.
Leaving the SEC for Baylor in the Big 12, Lagway entered the season as a potential Heisman contender after throwing for 4,179 yards and 28 touchdowns in the first two seasons of his college career at Florida.
What Does Losing Lagway Mean for Baylor?
Dave Aranda and the Bears shouldn’t panic over the loss of Lagway. Nate Bennett is a capable quarterback, and sending early reps his way could pay dividends down the road should Baylor find itself in this unfortunate situation again down the road.
For Lagway, though, is an incredibly deflating detour after his 333-yard debut in Atlanta at the beginning of the month. Considering Lagway continued playing after sustaining his injury against Auburn, it’s hard to tell just how confident Baylor’s medical staff is throwing the Willis, Texas, native back out there just two weeks later. Aranda described the injury as an “ankle sprain,” according to a report by SicEm365.
