Big 12 Has ‘Little Interest’ in Adding San Diego State: Report

NCAA Football: Toledo at San Diego State

The Big 12 Conference has “little interest” in adding San Diego State, according to a new report from CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd.

This report comes after a tumultuous couple of weeks for the Aztecs, who announced their intentions to leave the Mountain West Conference, but later reneged on their planned resignation, only to end up walking back to the league with their tail between their legs.

This news from Dodd comes despite the fact that it’s well known that Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark does have interest in expansion for the league into the fourth time zone out west. However, the Big 12 Conference appears more focused on the potential of bringing aboard Pac-12 schools, along with the possibility of adding UConn.

That means the best bet for the Aztecs remains the Pac-12 Conference, which, according to a recent report from Dan Patrick, is still of interest to the league.

But no matter what, until the Pac-12 Conference finds itself a TV deal, none of it matters. The Pac-12 is on the brink, as the league most recently pushed back its own deadline for a new TV deal from July 1 to the end of the month.

As for San Diego State, they have absolutely zero leverage right now. There is a meeting of Mountain West Conference presidents on July 17 with SDSU’s status expected to be discussed at that time. Since their July 1 deadline has passed, the buyout for the Aztecs to leave the conference has officially jumped to $34 million.

So in just two short weeks, the Aztecs went from officially planning their exit, to being embarrassed in going back to the Mountain West, and now one of their two lifelines out, the Big 12, has little reported interest.

Tough times in SoCal.
