Bill Self After Gonzaga Loss: ‘For the Last Month, I’ve Been Thinking About Next Season’
The good news? Bill Self isn’t leaving Lawrence. The bad news? He’s getting roasted for his post-game comments following Kansas’ loss to Gonzaga in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Jayhawks got routed by the Bulldogs 89-68 after leading by one at halftime. The Zags made their first five 3-pointers of the second half, not missing from long range until 1:30 remained and the game had long entered extended garbage time. They shot 60% from the floor and 53% from 3.
And after the game, Kansas head coach Bill Self said, “For the last month, I’ve been thinking about next season, to be honest. Not in the moments during the game, but obviously, we had eight guys on scholarship, that were healthy there late, and injuries are part of the game, so that’s not an excuse. But we could have done a much better job as a staff putting more guys out there that we can play. So that’s something I thought about for a long time. And the thing about it is in basketball, early on, you can play through some things. But the course of a season, there’s a grind that goes with it, bodies get run down, injuries occur, that’s all part of it. And when you don’t have as much firepower that you’ve had in past years, it certainly showed this year.”
While Self was getting some blowback for the comments, his own athletic director Travis Goff came to his defense on social media.
Goff then also went on to say.
All in all, it has been a forgettable season for the Jayhawks. The team dealt with injuries, surprising losses on their home court, and an early exit from the Big 12 Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.
And now for Bill Self, he can completely focus on next season.
