BYU Quarterback Battle to Continue into Fall Camp
While the BYU Cougars narrowly missed a bowl game in 2023 with senior quarterback Kedon Slovis under center, the team is entering full quarterback competition mode ahead of the upcoming season.
BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick spoke on the Cougars quarterback room and mentioned that the quarterback battle will continue into fall camp.
BYU currently has 10 quarterbacks on their roster, including Cade Fennegan, Jake Retzlaff, Nick Billoups, Cole Hagen, Ryder Burton, Gerry Bohanon, Treyson Bourguet, Dane Christensen, Micha Fe’a, and Noah Lugo.
While the starting job is open competition for just about every player listed above, the competition mainly focuses on two players. Junior quarterback Jake Retzlaff and senior quarterback Gerry Bohanon are the two names to watch. Retzlaff saw action for the Cougars in 2023, and Bohanon found some success at USF.
Roderick spoke about the competition and mentioned that Retzlaff has had a really nice camp, throwing zero interceptions in 15 practices.
With the Cougars wrapping up their spring ball on Saturday, fans of the Cougars will have to exercise patience and continue to wait to hear the name of their starting quarterback announced. BYU kicks off its 2024 season on Saturday, August 31st, against Southern Illinois.
