Oklahoma State Cowboys

Only One College Football Team Has Trailed More This Season Than Oklahoma State

NCAA Football: Arizona State at Oklahoma State

It’s no secret that things haven’t gone as planned in Stillwater (OK) this season. The Pokes started the season off with a three-game winning streak, including a double-overtime win against Arkansas, and looked like they might be able to round into a Big 12 contender.

Then, all at once, it came crashing down. The first sign of real trouble came in Manhattan (KS) when the Cowboys weren’t competitive in a 42-20 loss to Kansas State. Then, the following week, a 38-14 loss to West Virginia compounded the issues.

Since then, the Pokes have lost four more games and find themselves staring at a winless record in Big 12 play. The 2024 version of Oklahoma State has looked nothing like the Mike Gundy teams we’ve seen in seasons past.

In fact, the lack of competitiveness in this team is very alarming when you consider the program had gone to 18 straight bowl games before this season. Take a look at this stat shared by 247Sports’ Cody Nagel, which shows the teams that have spent the most time trailing in conference games this season.

As I’ve mentioned before, Florida State is the only thing standing between Mike Gundy’s program and being the laughingstock of college football. The Noles are also the only team that has been behind in conference games more this season, but not by much.

With Texas Tech and Colorado being the only two games left on the schedule, there’s a very real chance that Oklahoma State will end the season with a 3-9 record and go winless in conference play.

Is that enough for the program to move on from its winningest coach in history?
