BYU starting quarterback Jake Retzlaff has officially entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after news surfaced that he faces a seven-game suspension under the university’s Honor Code.
According to a report from the Salt Lake Tribune’s Kevin Reynolds, Retzlaff received a seven-game suspension in connection with an Honor Code violation, which ended his time in Provo.
Retzlaff’s legal situation was intertwined with university policy from start to finish. In a May lawsuit, he was accused of sexual assault during a November 2023 incident. His legal response asserts the encounter was consensual. Still, such an admission, despite denying the assault, violates BYU’s Honor Code, which prohibits premarital sex.
Missing seven games would cost Retzlaff more than half of his final season of eligibility, and likely endanger his NFL ambitions. BYU is set to begin practice soon, and with Retzlaff out the door, the ruling leaves the Cougars with a significant gap under center.
What this means for BYU, in short, is a lot. The group will likely now have to scramble into a late quarterback carousel, or look to unproven depth and recent transfer portal pickups who will suddenly be thrust into competition.
In the case of Jake Retzlaff, it’s hard to say what comes next. His reputation is at a low point due to the ongoing legal situation, but since he’s a big name at a premium position, he’ll likely end up somewhere.
For Kalani Sitake, it’s about as close to a nightmare situation as you can get. The university has already faced increased scrutiny surrounding Title IX and Honor Code compliance.
