The Houston Cougars are off to a strong start in the 2025 campaign, entering this weekend with a 5-1 record. They’ll look to keep the momentum going on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they face the 4-2 Arizona Wildcats.
Saturday’s Big 12 matchup will kick off at 12 p.m. ET on FS1 in Houston with the Wildcats placed as 1.5-point favorites. The over/under is set at 47.5 total points. Here are two key players to watch in this game, followed by the top storylines for each team, and a prediction from Heartland College Sports.
Two Key Players to Watch
Noah Fifita (QB, Arizona)
Quarterback Noah Fifita has shown noticeable improvement in his decision-making from a year ago, already throwing for 15 touchdowns with just four interceptions. While he’s capable of creating plays outside the pocket, his accuracy as a passer stands out, having eclipsed 350 passing yards in two games this season. He’ll face a Houston defense that hasn’t been seriously tested outside of its lone loss to Texas Tech.
Amare Thomas (WR, Houston)
Star wideout Amare Thomas recorded his second 100-yard performance of the 2025 season in last weekend’s dominant win over Oklahoma State, hauling in seven catches for 157 yards and averaging 22.7 yards per reception. In what could turn into a high-scoring affair, Houston will need to get Thomas involved early and stretch the field to help quarterback Conner Weigman and the offense find their rhythm.
Two Key Storylines
Houston Counting on Weigman to Keep Offense Rolling
Following a disappointing showing in Houston’s loss to Texas Tech, Weigman responded with a strong performance against Oklahoma State, throwing for over 300 yards and two touchdowns. He’s taken care of the football, with just two interceptions on the season, but if Houston hopes to stay in the Big 12 title hunt, the offense will need to hit on explosive plays, and Weigman will be key to making that happen.
Can Arizona’s Defense Stop The Run?
BYU racked up 258 rushing yards against the Wildcats, and with Houston boasting a dynamic back in Dean Connors, a similar ground effort could pose serious problems for Arizona. Connors has shown the ability to break off chunk plays when the Cougars get rolling up front. Establishing the run early would not only open up play-action opportunities for Weigman but also help Houston control the tempo in what could be a high-scoring affair.
Prediction: Houston 28, Arizona 21
With Weigman finding his rhythm and Connors giving the offense balance, Houston has the playmakers to challenge an Arizona defense that’s struggled to stop the run. The Wildcats have talent behind Fifita, but their inconsistency, especially away from home, raises questions. If Houston can control the clock and avoid turnovers, they should be able to wear down Arizona and make enough plays late to secure a statement win heading into the second half of the season.
