Oklahoma State University officials confirmed early Sunday that a shooting at Carreker East residence hall left three people wounded during the early hours of homecoming weekend. Investigators said there is no ongoing threat to the Stillwater campus as police continue to search for those responsible.
The shooting reportedly took place around 3:40 a.m. when police received calls about gunfire inside the dorm. Authorities later confirmed that three individuals had been injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The names of the victims have not been released, but university officials said at least one of those hurt is an Oklahoma State student. The university did not immediately provide details on the extent of the victims’ injuries but said all are expected to survive.
According to preliminary reports, the shooting followed a large private gathering that began off campus and continued inside the dormitory before violence erupted. Police Chief Michael Beckner said OSU officers responded within minutes and secured the area, working alongside Stillwater Police and the Payne County Sheriff’s Office. Beckner added that investigators believe the incident was isolated and not part of a wider threat to students or staff.
The university issued several emergency alerts through its campus safety system, urging students to avoid the residence hall while officers investigated. By midmorning, officials confirmed that the immediate danger had passed and that campus operations, including homecoming weekend events, would continue as planned.
The timing of the shooting, coming during one of Oklahoma State’s busiest weekends of the year, has left the campus community shaken. Thousands of students, alumni, and visitors had traveled to Stillwater for the university’s homecoming celebrations. University President Jim Hess said counseling services and student support resources would be made available to anyone affected.
Oklahoma State Police and university officials are urging anyone with information to contact investigators. The school emphasized that campus safety remains its top priority and pledged to share updates as soon as new information becomes available.
