Texas Tech mega-booster Cody Campbell’s preseason promise of “retribution” against Big 12 opponents resurfaced in a big way after the Red Raiders’ 37-24 loss to Cincinnati on Saturday.

Campbell made the comments during Texas Tech’s The Program documentary while discussing the fallout from the Brendan Sorsby situation and how other Big 12 programs handled it.

“We’re not going to forget about that, and I don’t think they’ll forget about it either when we’re up by 40 and still throwing the ball in the fourth quarter,” Campbell said. “That’s where the retribution will come.”

Well, Cincinnati certainly didn’t forget.

Week 8 Retribution Didn’t Happen

The Bearcats handed No. 8 Texas Tech its first loss of the season on Saturday, jumping out to a 24-6 halftime lead before finishing off a 37-24 victory at Nippert Stadium.

And Cincinnati made sure Campbell heard about it afterward.

The Bearcats’ social media account tagged Campbell in a post following the win, while the old quote quickly began making the rounds again across college football social media.

The irony was difficult to miss.

Instead of Texas Tech being up 40 and throwing late in the fourth quarter, Cincinnati controlled much of the game and eventually took a knee to finish off the Red Raiders.

Campbell himself wasn’t pleased with Texas Tech’s performance, writing afterward on social media, “There is no excuse or reason to lose a game like this. We have to be better.”

Texas Tech is still 6-1 and very much alive in the Big 12 Championship race, so one loss hardly ends the Red Raiders’ season.

But when you publicly promise “retribution” against conference opponents, those comments are inevitably going to come back around when things don’t go according to plan.

And Cincinnati made sure that happened Saturday.
