Big 12 Recruiting

Two Big 12 Schools in Play for 2028 California Quarterback

A key name to watch in California’s Class of 2028, Clovis West quarterback Jamar Howard has narrowed his recruitment to 12 schools, including the BYU Cougars and Utah Utes, per a recent post on his personal X account.

Howard’s college list includes Arkansas, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Oregon, Ole Miss, SMU, UCLA and Washington. He’s currently the No. 28 quarterback in the 2028 class and the 29th overall recruit in California.

Only a junior, Howard already has 4,257 career passing yards, 47 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in 23 different high school contests.

Despite other Big 12 offers, including Arizona State, Howard opted to keep just BYU and Utah in his final dozen as the 6-foot-5, 185-pound passer enters his junior year.

Should we get another Holy War battle in Howard’s recruitment, Utah could present a slight edge for the West Coast product via QB coach Ryan Gunderson, who spent three seasons leading the pass game at UCLA from 2021 to 2023.

Kalani Sitake, though, has molded his share of quarterbacks. Zach Wilson (2018 to 2020), Jaren Hall (2018 to 2022), Jake Retzlaff (2023 to 2024) and current starter Bear Bachmeier (2025 to Present) were all successful during their time in Provo.

It’s early in his recruitment, but Howard has two potential Big 12 programs on his radar for college ball, and they’re each conference contenders in 2026.
