Texas Tech’s highest-rated commitment in the 2027 recruiting class is making a major move ahead of his senior season.
Five-star defensive lineman Jalen Brewster, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2027 Rivals300, is transferring from Cedar Hill High School in Texas to national powerhouse Buford High School in Georgia, according to Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong.
For Texas Tech fans, the important part is that Brewster remains committed to the Red Raiders.
The 6-foot-3, 300-pound defensive lineman has been committed to Texas Tech since October 4, 2025, after choosing the Red Raiders over a list of programs that included Ohio State, Texas A&M and Indiana. His commitment has helped Texas Tech build the No. 9 recruiting class in the country according to Rivals.
Brewster explained that his decision to leave Cedar Hill was centered around his goal of finishing high school early.
“Transferring to Buford came down to what was best for my future,” Brewster told Rivals. “This move allows me to reach my goal of graduating in December while staying on track academically and athletically.”
That December graduation could be particularly important for Texas Tech. It would put Brewster in position to enroll early in Lubbock and participate in the Red Raiders’ 2027 offseason program, assuming his commitment holds.
And that’s the part Texas Tech fans will continue watching.
Brewster has remained committed to the Red Raiders, but his recruitment hasn’t completely gone away. He visited LSU and Florida during the spring and summer, with LSU currently appearing to be Texas Tech’s biggest challenger, according to Rivals. However, Wiltfong reported that Brewster is expected to completely shut down his recruitment soon.
Keeping Brewster would be another massive recruiting victory for Texas Tech as the program continues trying to establish itself as one of the Big 12’s premier destinations for elite high school talent. But, if this move to Georgia signals a move away from Lubbock and the Big 12, it sure would sting the Red Raiders.
Brewster isn’t simply one of the better defensive linemen in the class. Rivals currently ranks him as the No. 1 overall player in the entire 2027 recruiting cycle, while 247Sports also lists him as the No. 1 defensive lineman and among the very best prospects nationally.
His move to Buford will also give him an opportunity to play his final high school season for one of the country’s premier programs. Rivals compares Brewster’s combination of explosiveness, power and athleticism to Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Carter and projects him as a potential future first-round NFL Draft pick.
For Texas Tech, the equation is straightforward: keep Brewster locked into the 2027 class and get him to Lubbock as an early enrollee.
If that happens, one of the best prospects the Red Raiders have ever landed could be on campus months earlier than the typical freshman.
