New details have emerged surrounding the locker room altercation involving former TCU safety Jacob Fields and Horned Frogs wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma, painting a much more serious picture of the August incident.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Ezukanma was hospitalized for three days after suffering a brain bleed, concussion and shoulder injury following the alleged attack.
The incident occurred inside TCU’s locker room on August 13.
According to the affidavit, Ezukanma told TCU police that Fields punched him, causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness. Fields is also accused of kicking Ezukanma in the head while he was on the ground.
Ezukanma was eventually transported to Harris Hospital, where an initial CT scan revealed a brain bleed. He was transferred to the ICU, and a second CT scan showed that the hematoma had grown. He remained hospitalized for three days.
The affidavit also provides additional context regarding what may have led to the confrontation. Ezukanma reportedly told police that Fields had become frustrated after struggling to defend him during practice. Ezukanma previously made a similar allegation in a since-deleted Instagram video discussing the incident.
Fields was dismissed from the TCU football program two days after the altercation for what the school described as a violation of team rules.
The former Louisiana Tech standout turned himself in to authorities on Sunday and was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was later released after posting a $50,000 bond.
Fields’ representatives have indicated they do not plan to litigate the matter publicly and will allow the legal process to play out.
The latest details add another layer to an already turbulent situation for TCU. The school has also faced criticism for its handling of the Star-Telegram’s coverage of the incident after revoking the newspaper’s athletic credentials.
The case against Fields will now proceed through the Tarrant County legal system.
