Two weeks after BYU helped expose major problems with the Colorado State defense, the Rams have made a stunning coaching change. Colorado State has parted ways with defensive coordinator Tyson Summers following a bizarre sequence during Saturday’s game against Oregon State.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Summers was dismissed after he was replaced as Colorado State’s defensive play-caller during the 56-26 loss to Oregon State.
Colorado State head coach Jim Mora confirmed after the game that Summers was relieved of his play-calling duties and subsequently left the field. Mora said Summers is no longer with the program.
It’s a remarkable development just five games into Mora’s first season at Colorado State, who is off to a 2-3 start.
Colorado State’s Defensive Woes
The warning signs had been building on the defensive side of the football. Colorado State allowed a combined 100 points and 1,101 yards in consecutive losses to UTSA and BYU before Saturday’s game.
The BYU performance was particularly ugly. The Cougars rolled to a 41-23 victory over Colorado State, piling up 481 yards of offense. Running back LJ Martin rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns as the Rams struggled to slow down BYU’s ground game.
Now, less than a week later, Summers is out.
Summers had previous defensive coordinator stops at several programs and also served as the head coach at Georgia Southern from 2016-17 before joining Mora’s Colorado State staff.
But Saturday’s unusual mid-game change ultimately proved to be the end of his time with the Rams.
Colorado State will now have to move forward with a new defensive play-caller as Mora attempts to turn things around in his first season leading the program.
