Big 12 Baseball Power Rankings: A New Number One

NCAA Baseball: Big 12 Conference Baseball Championship

Baseball is in full swing as conference play has arrived. Each week I will release my Big 12 baseball power rankings and here are this week’s rankings.

1. Oklahoma State Cowboys 26-11 (9-3)

We have a new number one as the Oklahoma State Cowboys take the top spot in this week’s power rankings. The Cowboys have climbed all the way up to the number three spot in D1 Baseball’s Top 25 rankings and have earned it with the way they have played this season. Oklahoma State went up to Morgantown to take on a red-hot West Virginia team and came back to Stillwater with the series win.

2. TCU Horned Frogs 25-12 (10-5)

Well, the tables have turned for this TCU baseball team. After a bad week and dropping two straight series, the Horned Frogs come out last weekend and sweep a top-five Texas Tech team at home. TCU controlled just about the entire series and looked dominant in their 11-3 rout of Texas Tech on Sunday.

3. Texas Tech Red Raiders 27-13 (7-5)

The Red Raiders had a good run at the number one spot, but it is now over after getting swept by TCU. I thought Tech would end up squeaking out a series win but they just didn’t put it all together last weekend. Pitching was an issue, and the bats got a tad cold over their three-game stretch. Despite the setback, Texas Tech remains in the hunt for a Big 12 title.

4. West Virginia Mountaineers 22-12 (6-3)

It’s a shame I had to leave them here because they were just a game away from taking the top spot on this list. The Mountaineers were able to tie the series on Saturday with Oklahoma State before falling short on Easter Sunday. It was their first series loss in Big 12 play, but they still have plenty of baseball ahead of them.

5. Texas Longhorns 26-13 (6-6)

Just when I think this team is going to climb back up, they shoot themselves in the foot. Texas was supposed to be the team that dominated this year and instead it has been a mess over the last few weeks. While they did take care of TCU, they fell flat against Texas Tech before waking up in the third game and the same thing happened to them in Manhattan, Kansas. They lost the series in the first two games against an underwhelming Kansas State team. Texas better wake up and wake up fast.

6. Kansas State Wildcats 19-17 (2-7)

After reaching the bottom of the power rankings, Kansas State has now launched itself into the sixth spot on the list. I may be overreacting a bit considering they still are just 3-9 in Big 12 play but taking a series against a top ten Texas team should be a huge jolt in the arm for this team. Before the season, I thought Kansas State had a chance to be in the top half of the Big 12 but it just hasn’t all come together for them this year. Maybe this is the boost they needed to get the wheels rolling

7. Oklahoma Sooners 22-13 (4-5)

With Kansas State moving up, I had to move the Sooners down a spot. They beat Pacific twice but did drop their lone game against Lamar. The good news is even though they don’t have a great conference record at the moment, they do get Kansas this upcoming weekend which should help them in the win column.

8. Baylor Bears 20-17 (4-8)

Even though they took care of Kansas last weekend, I am still not a big believer that this team will compete for a conference crown or have a shot to make the postseason. Beating Kansas was good as they got their first series win in Big 12 play, but they still have a big uphill battle ahead as they will now face Texas and Texas Tech in back-to-back weeks. I have a tough time seeing them win either one of those series.

9. Kansas Jayhawks 16-20 (2-7)

Nobody should be surprised at this because the Jayhawks haven’t been very good at all when it comes to conference play. It seems like they always managed to play a close game, steal a game, and then get blown out in every three-game series they play against other Big 12 teams. Maybe one of these weekends they will manage to steal a series from someone.
