D1Baseball Top 25 Rankings: Texas Tech Launches into Top 5 After Oklahoma State Sweep

After an eventful weekend in Big 12 baseball, there are four teams representing the conference in D1Baseball’s latest Top 25 Poll.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders had perhaps the most impressive weekend in all of college baseball as they went up to Stillwater and swept the third-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. That performance helped them climb from ninth to No. 5 in the latest poll, but it did more than that. The sweep kept Texas Tech’s hopes of claiming a Big 12 Championship alive as a series win over Oklahoma next weekend would secure them at least a share of the title.

Next up on this list is Oklahoma State, the team on the receiving end of the sweep in Stillwater this weekend. As a result of an 0-4 week that also included an 8-7 loss to Dallas Baptist, the Cowboys fell from No. 3 to No. 8 in this week’s poll. The Cowboys are still in the hunt for a share of the Big 12 Championship, but will need some help to do so. They will need to sweep Baylor and hope that in-state rival Oklahoma can steal at least one game against the Red Raiders.

Texas stayed put at No. 22 this week after going 1-0 this week, a 12-2 victory over Texas Southern. The Longhorns are out of the Big 12 Title race, but can hope to get hot at the right time in the conference tournament and make some noise. Kansas is on the schedule this week and will finish out Texas’ regular season schedule when they visit Austin for a three-game series starting Thursday.

Reentering the poll at No. 24 is the final Big 12 team on this list: TCU. The Horned Frogs finished their Big 12 schedule against Kansas this weekend and finished at 16-8, putting them in great shape to win at least a share of the Big 12 title. TCU needs Oklahoma to take one from Texas Tech this weekend to keep their hopes alive, but that’s not too far of odds considering the way the Sooners have played as of late.
