Week 2 Big 12 Football Players of the Week Announced

With Week 2 of the college football season officially in the books, the Big 12 Conference announced four players that would be taking home the second iteration of the Big 12 Football Weekly Awards for the 2023 season.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers won the title of Offensive Player of the Week, while his teammate Adonai Mitchell took home Newcomer of the Week honors. Oklahoma’s Danny Stutsman claimed Defensive Player of the Week honors, and UCF’s Colton Boomer was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Ewers took home the title of Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Longhorns to a 34-24 win over Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday after going 24-38 for 349 passing yards and three scores. Ewers extended his streak of consecutive passes without an interception to 184, which marks the second-longest stretch in program history behind Sam Ehlinger with 308, according to the official release.

Oklahoma’s junior linebacker Danny Stutsman was all over the field on Saturday recording 17 tackles against SMU. The Florida native was one tackle shy of his career high of 18, while adding 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and one fumble recovery in the Sooners’ 28-11 win over SMU on Saturday night.

Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell became the second Longhorn to take home a weekly award in Week 2, earning Newcomer of the Week honors following a special performance against Alabama. Mitchell caught three passes for 78 yards and two scores on Saturday with both scores coming in the fourth quarter to help secure the win for Steve Sarkisian’s group.

Boomer was the definition of clutch against Boise State on Saturday putting together one of the best special teams performances of any player in the country in Week 2. The crowing achievement of Boomers’ day was putting a game-winning 40-yard kick through the uprights as time ran out to give the Knights an 18-16 win over Boise State. Boomer went 4-4 from the field including kicks from 42, 50, 33, and 40-yards out becoming one of three kickers in the nation with a four-field goal game this season.
