Big 12 Baseball Sunday Six-Pack: TCU Sweeps UCLA
Is there anything better than cold beer and baseball? It’s a combination that is hard to beat during the season. No matter what kind of beer you drink (or how many), let’s take a look at some of the best action on the Big 12 baseball diamond from Sunday with a nice six-pack.
Best Game
#24 Kansas State vs Holy Cross
Believe it or not, Kansas State was playing for the series on Sunday against an inferior Holy Cross team. The Crusaders got on the board first, but Kansas State tied the game in the second inning when Jayden Lobliner knocked in a run.
From there, the Wildcats took over for a bit with a pair of key hits from Kaelen Culpepper and Mason Schwalbach. It also helped that Lobliner came up big once again with a two-run shot to left field.
With a 5-1 lead going into the sixth inning, all Kansas State had to do was hang on and they barely did. Holy Cross came within one in the eighth inning after a solo home run by Cam Byrant but fortunately, the Wildcats held on for the win.
Best Win
#5 TCU over #20 UCLA
After clinching the series on Saturday, TCU was looking to complete the sweep on Sunday. The Horned Frogs got the scoring started early and took it to the Bruins right away. TCU ended up scoring seven runs in the first two innings and never looked back. While UCLA did score a couple of runs in the third inning, this game was over once Karson Bowen hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning.
With the win, TCU swept a top 20 UCLA team.
Worst Loss
Cincinnati
While the Bearcats won their first two games in the Coastal Carolina tournament, they had a complete meltdown on Sunday against the host team. Coastal Carolina put up an absurd 18 runs in the first two innings. Cincinnati stood no chance in this game after that and ended up falling 25-2.
Sunday MVP
Texas Tech OF Owen Washburn
Owen had a big day against Texas Southern to wrap up Tech’s record setting weekend. He drew a walk to bring in a run in the fourth inning and then followed that up with a two-run homer in the fifth and another two-run bomb in the sixth.
Pitcher of the Day
Texas RHP Cody Howard
Cody pitched a gem on Sunday afternoon as he went five full innings and didn’t allow a single run. In fact, the Texas pitching staff didn’t allow a single all weekend long, which was extremely impressive.
Best Home Run
UCF 2B Andrew Estrella
For the second game in a row, Andrew hit a grand slam. While I didn’t give him the best home run award on Saturday, I couldn’t pass him up twice after his grand slam.
