Mike Boynton on His Future: ’12-20 Isn’t Good Enough’
On Tuesday, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton discussed his future in Stillwater following the Cowboys’ 77-62 loss to UCF, saying, “Obviously, 12-20 isn’t good enough.”
While he did respond to the question, Boynton mostly shot down comments regarding his future status saying, “Not sure I’ve given a ton of thought to that.”
“Obviously, 12-20 isn’t good enough, and I’m not shying away from that,” Boynton said. There are things we all need to do as a collective group to get better, and we’ll adjust those things once we get back to campus.”
Boynton was awarded the job at Oklahoma State after serving as an assistant coach on Brad Underwood’s staff. Underwood went on to accept a new job at Illinois which prompted Oklahoma State to promote Mike Boynton as the 20th head basketball coach at Oklahoma State University.
Since being awarded the head coaching job in 2017-2018, Boynton holds an overall record of 119-108 and an abysmal conference record of 51-75. Through seven years with the program, the Cowboys have been to the NCAA Tournament just once under Mike Boynton. Oklahoma State’s 2020-2021 team, known for developing the top pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Cade Cunningham, was upset by No. 12 Oregon State in the Round of 32.
While the Cowboys have to worry about several different factors in the decision of whether or not to retain Mike Boynton, Oklahoma State has just four winning seasons to show for Boynton’s tenure and an awful winning percentage in conference play (.405). With the loss to UCF, Oklahoma State finished off the 2023-24 season on a six-game losing streak, with their last win coming on February 21st vs. Cincinnati.
