The Big 12 delivered a big television number for FOX on Friday night — and it could give the network another reason to feature the conference in that window moving forward.
Texas Tech’s 28-26 win over Houston drew 3.028 million viewers on FOX College Football Friday, according to FOX Sports PR.
The game, which featured two ranked Big 12 teams and wasn’t decided until Houston failed on a potential game-tying two-point conversion in the final seconds, peaked at 4.074 million viewers.
FOX said the audience was 31% higher than its average Friday night college football audience last season.
Even more encouraging for FOX, its Friday night college football package is averaging 2.575 million viewers this season, an 11% increase from last year’s Friday night average.
And the Big 12 could be positioned to benefit.
FOX has made Friday night college football a dedicated primetime window, and the network specifically included the Big 12 alongside the Big Ten and Mountain West when promoting its 2026 package.
The Big 12 already has eight Friday games scheduled this season, including Missouri-Kansas and Houston-Texas Tech in September. West Virginia-Utah will also air on FOX on Black Friday.
That doesn’t necessarily mean FOX will immediately start moving more Big 12 games away from Saturdays. There are scheduling considerations, fan travel concerns and, particularly in Texas, conflicts with high school football.
But television ultimately drives a significant portion of college football scheduling.
And when a Big 12 matchup attracts more than three million viewers on a Friday night, networks are going to notice.
If Big 12 teams continue producing numbers like Texas Tech-Houston, don’t be surprised if the conference becomes an even bigger part of Friday night college football in the years ahead.
