Lance Leipold and the Kansas Jayhawks suffered some bad fate on Saturday afternoon, with senior tight end DeShawn Hanika suffering a torn Achilles.

Kansas Enthusiast Bryson Stricker first reported news of the injury. Hanika joined the Jayhawks through the transfer portal after spending the previous two seasons with the Iowa State Cyclones.

Hanika, a 6-foot-6 tight end from Topeka, Kansas, committed to join the Jayhawks through the transfer portal on December 11th. The Kansas native finished off his junior season with the Cyclones, recording 17 grabs for 244 yards and four touchdowns.

Coming out of Butler Community College in the Class of 2020, Hanika was listed as a three-star prospect by the 247Sports index as well as the nation’s 191st-ranked JUCO prospect. He also checked in as the 11th-ranked tight end in his class and the 52nd-ranked player in the state of Kansas.

The loss of Hanika is big for the Jayhawks’ tight end room as the senior tight end is one of the group’s most experienced members. Kansas and the rest of the tight end room will take the field on Thursday, August 29th, against the Lindenwood Lions.
