The matchup for the 2024 Big 12 Championship wasn’t decided until the very last game of the regular season, and even then, tiebreakers had to be used to separate four teams at the top of the standings.
When BYU’s 30-19 win over Houston went final just before 1:00 a.m. CT, a four-way tie for first place became official, sending Arizona State and Iowa State to the Big 12 title game.
Arizona State destroyed Arizona 49-7, and Iowa State handled business against K-State 29-21, and thanks to extenuating protocols, the Sun Devils and Cyclones got the nod to go to Arlington.
These two teams did not face each other in the regular season, as was the case with most of the top teams in the league, but now we’ll finally get to see the Big 12’s top teams face off for a conference crown and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

We’ve got ourselves one heck of a Big 12 Championship matchup with Iowa State and Arizona State converging in Arlington on Saturday.
Kenny Dillingham’s Sun Devils are arguably the biggest story in college football this season, coming into Championship weekend with a 10-2 record and the No. 12 ranking in the latest AP Poll. After being picked to finish 16th out of 16 teams in the Big 12, ASU has a chance to make history in their first-ever meeting with Iowa State.
The Cyclones, who were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll, dropped a couple of midseason games after charging out to a 7-0 start, but closed out their year with three straight wins to get back to Arlington for the first time since 2020.
Of all the potential storylines, the one that will decide this game will be the matchup between Arizona State’s ground game and Iowa State’s rush defense. Cam Skattebo is a fringe Heisman contender and has arguably been the most valuable player in the Big 12 all season long, with 1,866 all-purpose yards and 19 touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Iowa State’s defense has been susceptible to the run at times, ranking 14th in the Big 12 (96th nationally) with 173.7 yards per game and 15th in the league with 5.0 yards per carry. If the Sun Devils can win the turnover battle and give Skattebo a healthy dose of successful carries, it should keep ASU’s unlikely season rolling into the College Football Playoff.
