Why Shedeur Sanders Absolutely Belongs in the First Round of the 2025 NFL Draft

We are less than 12 hours away from the start of the 2025 NFL Draft. I know for some people, they don’t care, but as a fan of an NFL team (Go Texans), I always look forward to seeing who they’re going to take—unless you have an idiotic general manager who trades away all of your first-round picks. But that’s neither here nor there.

All that matters is that some players will have their dreams come true. Think about all the hard work and sacrifices these guys have made over the years—all the blood, sweat, and tears that have gone into it. By no means am I a super emotional guy, but it really hits me when I see a guy crying with his family because his dream just became a reality by having his name called.

With the emotional stuff out of the way, now it’s time to lock in. And if you’re like me, you’re constantly looking at mock drafts from everyone, ranging from Mel Kiper to your 45-year-old neighbor who lives in their parents’ basement.

While looking around at some of the big sites that cover the draft, one mock draft in particular caught my eye. CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones had a mock draft earlier this week that left one big name out of the first round.

That name was none other than Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. For those who follow our site, you know I made a case for Shedeur to be the number one overall pick instead of Cam Ward. Whether you agree with that or not is one thing, but I think it would be absolutely bonkers if Shedeur’s name didn’t get called in the first round on Thursday night.

When you look at the teams who might take a quarterback in the draft, the list isn’t exactly what I would call short. Tennessee, Cleveland, New York (Giants and Jets), Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles (Rams) are all teams likely looking to draft signal-callers this week.

While all draft experts disagree on plenty, one thing I noticed across the board is that almost everyone has Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders as the top two quarterback prospects. Ward is the heavy favorite to be selected number one by Tennessee, who has the first pick, which means Sanders will be next in line.

But could Sanders fall all the way out of the first round? That would mean only one quarterback would be taken in the first round. That’s only happened twice in the last 23 years (2013 and 2022).

In this day and age, NFL general managers have shorter stints than ever before. It’s not uncommon for a GM to get canned within three years, so you’d best believe some of these guys are trying to make splash picks.

Plus, teams often reach for quarterbacks more than any other position because they know just how valuable these guys are. Ask any general manager out there—they’d rather trade up to get the guy they think can change the franchise than sit on their hands and hope he falls into their lap.

I said it last week, and I’ll say it again: Shedeur Sanders is a first-round pick. And with so many teams eyeing quarterbacks, I’m confident in saying he will not fall down the draft boards out of the first round. Perhaps the bigger question is: which team will take him? Only time will tell.
