The Baylor Bears may have been left out of the 2025 AP Preseason Top 25, but not everyone agrees with that decision. CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah made his case this week that Baylor should have been included, pointing to the program’s stability and roster makeup heading into the season.
In a video posted to social media, Jeyarajah noted that Baylor returns one of the most experienced rosters in the Big 12 and addressed key positions through the transfer portal. While the Bears finished last season short of Arlington, he argued that their upward trajectory late in the year, combined with a favorable early schedule, could quickly vault them into the rankings.
Jeyarajah also highlighted the team’s continuity on the coaching staff under Dave Aranda and the benefits of retaining much of its defensive core. Baylor’s secondary returns multiple starters, and the offense will be led by a veteran quarterback who is familiar with the system. In his view, that level of experience and stability often translates to early success — and early poll recognition.
The Bears did receive votes in the preseason poll, but they fell short of cracking the Top 25. Four Big 12 teams made the list: Arizona State, Kansas State, Iowa State, and Texas Tech. Jeyarajah’s argument suggests Baylor could join that group sooner rather than later, especially if they take advantage of early-season matchups before the conference schedule tightens.
Whether the AP voters overlooked Baylor or simply need more proof, the Bears will have opportunities to change minds quickly. If they open strong, Jeyarajah’s preseason prediction could look prescient by the time September ends.
