The message was shared on social media by Congressman Michael Baumgartner, who didn’t hold back. “Read the subtext of this letter from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey,” Baumgartner posted. “Drop the bullying BS, Greg. Do what’s right to create a level playing field for ALL schools and protect the future of the Olympic sports landscape.”
The core of the issue lies in Sankey’s dismissive tone and the suggestion that smaller conferences and schools should essentially stay quiet while the power conferences handle the future of college sports. The move was seen by many as an attempt to pressure G6 commissioners into silence as key governance decisions are made.
One of the loudest responses came from Texas Tech booster Cody Campbell, who has deep ties in the college football space. “All I can say is ‘Wow!!’ Bullying the G6 conference commissioners to prevent them from representing their members and making their voices heard!?” he wrote. “Is this consistent with the goal of doing what is best for ALL of college sports—women’s sports, Olympic sports, and smaller schools??”
The SEC has never been shy about flexing its influence, but this email paints a clear picture of a league that sees no value in collaboration. While the NCAA landscape undergoes seismic changes, leaders like Sankey should be building bridges. Instead, the SEC is guarding its turf and trying to quiet everyone else in the room.
What Sankey sent wasn’t leadership; it was arrogance. And the message it sends to the rest of college sports is as clear as it is disappointing. The SEC will take what it wants and pretend everyone else doesn’t matter.
