Kansas State quarterback Blake Barnett is coming back for 2026, and while that’s not going to light up headlines nationally, it’s still a nice piece of news for the Wildcats heading into a pretty uncertain offseason.
Barnett didn’t see a ton of action this past season, but when he did get on the field, it was usually part of something weird. He was the go-to guy for trick plays, gadget looks, and random short-yardage moments when the staff wanted something a little different. And to his credit, he handled that role pretty well. He posted 14 carries for 40 yards in his redshirt freshman season.
Now he’s sticking around, and that’s a good sign for a Kansas State team that’s already seen some movement. Chris Klieman is out the door, and with that comes the usual shuffle of players either hitting the portal or reevaluating their future, but it’s been relatively quiet, honestly. Barnett could’ve easily looked elsewhere. Instead, he’s doubling down.
The quarterback room at K-State starts and ends with Avery Johnson. The veteran quarterback has been in Manhattan since 2023 and is coming off his best year to date, with one year of eligibility remaining. Questions linger about his future in Manhattan, but the growing consensus is that he will stick around and finish out his career wearing purple.
Still, there’s something to be said for guys like Barnett who hang around and do their job. He’s been a team-first guy the entire time he’s been at K-State, and having that kind of presence in the locker room isn’t nothing. You want guys like that in the building when everything else is shifting.
So yeah, maybe this won’t trend on Twitter, but it’s one of those low-key returns that helps a team hold its shape. Barnett probably won’t be penciled in as the starter, but he’ll be involved, and don’t be shocked if he finds himself on the field again in 2026 when the Wildcats need something creative to happen.
