One day after adding new quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. through the transfer portal, Rich Rodriguez and the West Virginia Mountaineers picked up a new talented wideout to throw to.
That player is Troy transfer DJ Epps, who was incredibly productive last season in the Group of 5. In addition to his receiving ability, he was an electric player in the kick return game and should be a major contributor on special teams.
In 2025, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Epps posted 47 grabs for 512 receiving yards and five scores. He also finished in the Top 10 in the country with 554 total kick return yards. To say this fall was a breakout season for Epps would be an understatement, as prior to 2025, the Alabama native recorded one catch for five yards.
When asked about his initial visit to West Virginia, Epps kept it short and sweet, saying, “It definitely went well.” Well, it did go well, and now the Mountaineers have an explosive playmaker set to wear the blue and gold in the near future.
Epps is ranked fairly low in the transfer portal for his relative production. 247Sports has him listed as a three-star prospect in the portal as well as the nation’s 808th available player, and the 142nd-ranked receiver.
With the commitment, the Mountaineers now have seven players brought in through the portal, including Epps, Isaiah Patterson, Maliek Hawkins, Michael Hawkins, Geimere Latimer, Prince Strachan, and Will LeBlanc.
