Kansas State QB Avery Johnson Questionable for Big 12 Road Game at Arizona State

Kansas State plays Arizona State on Saturday, but the Wildcats might be without starting quarterback Avery Johnson, who was listed as questionable on the team’s initial availability report this week, raising concerns about his status for a pivotal Big 12 showdown in Tempe.

The injury designation comes as something of a surprise after Johnson played a starring role in Kansas State’s 35-24 victory over rival Kansas last weekend. The senior quarterback completed passes for 209 yards and a touchdown while adding 132 rushing yards on the ground, helping the Wildcats extend their dominance in the Sunflower Showdown.

However, Johnson’s day wasn’t entirely smooth.

During the game, he suffered a scary moment after taking an awkward fall at the end of a 59-yard run. Johnson remained on the turf for several minutes before eventually getting to his feet and finishing the game. At the time, he downplayed the incident, saying he simply had the wind knocked out of him.

Now, it appears there may be lingering concerns.

Reports indicate Johnson is dealing with an injury in the neck and shoulder area, although Kansas State has not publicly disclosed the exact nature of the issue. By listing him as questionable, the Wildcats are leaving open the possibility that he could suit up against the Sun Devils.

Johnson has been one of the league’s most productive quarterbacks this season, throwing for 1,301 yards and 10 touchdowns while providing a dynamic rushing threat. Just as notably, he has started 32 consecutive games for Kansas State and has largely avoided significant injuries throughout his college career.

If Johnson is unable to play, veteran backup Jacob Knuth would be the likely replacement. The senior has limited passing experience with the Wildcats but has contributed as a runner in spot duty.

Kansas State has dealt with quarterback injuries elsewhere on the roster this season, but Johnson’s health has never been a major concern. Until now.

Kansas State enters the game with a 4-2 record, 1-2 in Big 12 play, while Arizona State is 3-3 overall and 1-2 in league play. Both teams have their lone conference win over Kansas. Kick off on Saturday is set for 2:45 p.m. CT.
