There’s been a lot of talk this cycle about up-and-coming mid-major coaches, and one name that continues to float around is Utah State’s Jared Calhoun.
The veteran head coach has been successful everywhere he goes, with impressive tenures at Fairmont State, Youngstown State, and now, Utah State. With the Kansas State Wildcats moving on from Jerome Tang, could the new shiny coaching prospect be headed for a fourth state school this cycle?
Recently, in a podcast interview, experts at 247Sports highlighted Calhoun as a name to watch for the Wildcats. Matt Norlander and Zach Aldridge were the two discussing the situation, and though Cincinnati likely has an eye on Calhoun, the Wildcats are the first high-major team with an open job and will have the first crack at the coaching cycle.
“The name that I would put out there that I think Kansas State should target is Jerrod Calhoun, who is the coach at Utah State,” Norlander said. “He’s done a really good job there. He will have multiple options as well, but K-State’s the first high-major to come open. It’s got a lead, so to speak, from a public standpoint. We’ll see if they can get Calhoun. I think he would be a wonderful hire.”
The decision will have to wait a while, I’d imagine, as the Aggies are likely headed for the NCAA Tournament for a second-straight season. Will the Wildcats get the job done? It’s tough to say, but there are loads of impressive coaches this cycle to consider, and though Gene Taylor’s made a bit of a fool of himself lately, he gets the first crack at bringing in a new head coach.
