Iowa State Announces Next Step to See if Joshua Jefferson Can Play in the Sweet 16

The Iowa State Cyclones are still holding out hope for their biggest star ahead of the Sweet 16, but the next 24 hours will be critical.

Head coach T.J. Otzelberger confirmed that Joshua Jefferson is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday morning, which will help determine his availability moving forward in the NCAA Tournament.

“We will see how that goes and go from there,” Otzelberger said after their win over Kentucky.

Jefferson, an All-American and the centerpiece of Iowa State’s lineup, missed the Cyclones’ tournament matchup against Kentucky. They didn’t end up needing him in the contest, actually, as the Cyclones rolled to an 82-63 blowout win over the Wildcats. Still, getting him back is a massive priority for the rest of their NCAA Tournament run. Prior to the injury, Jefferson was averaging 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, serving as one of the most versatile players in the country.

His ability to impact the game across the board, scoring, rebounding, facilitating, and defending, makes him nearly impossible to replace. With the Sweet 16 looming, his status could significantly shape Iowa State’s ceiling moving forward.

At this point, the MRI is the next step in determining whether Jefferson can return during the NCAA Tournament. The results will provide clarity on both the severity of the injury and whether there’s a realistic path for him to get back on the floor in the coming days.

For Iowa State, the hope is simple: get good news and give their star a chance to return, but until the results are in, uncertainty remains. With everything on the line in March, the Cyclones now wait, knowing that Jefferson’s availability could ultimately determine just how far this team can go.
