Deion Sanders believes Colorado is better than its results are showing. Now the Buffaloes have to figure out why that isn’t translating to the scoreboard.
Following Colorado’s 23-13 loss to Baylor on Saturday, Sanders offered an interesting assessment of his team after the Buffaloes dropped their Big 12 opener and fell to 2-2 on the season.
“We’re better than this,” Sanders said. “It seems as though we’re better than our opponents, but the score does not dictate that. And that’s the fascinating thing about it. We gotta find out why.”
It’s a striking comment from Sanders after Colorado suffered its second consecutive loss.
The Buffaloes were coming off an ugly 41-7 loss at Northwestern and had an opportunity to bounce back against Baylor. Instead, Colorado’s offense struggled again, managing just 13 points in Waco.
Sanders even made a major change at quarterback during the game, benching Julian “JuJu” Lewis in favor of Isaac Wilson to begin the second half.
But the change wasn’t enough to get Colorado over the hump.
The Buffaloes now head back to Boulder searching for answers after consecutive road losses. And Sanders’ postgame comments make it clear that he doesn’t believe the issue is simply a lack of talent.
Colorado may believe it’s capable of playing with — and beating — the teams on its schedule. But as Sanders acknowledged Saturday, eventually that belief has to start showing up on the scoreboard.
At 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play, figuring out why it hasn’t will be one of Sanders’ biggest challenges moving forward. And the tough part? His next two games are against Top 15 teams, with No. 11 Texas Tech coming to Boulder next week, followed by No. 15 Utah two weeks after that, with a bye week in between.
