Mike Gundy Returning to Big 12 Spotlight as TNT, HBO Max Analyst

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy

Less than a year after his surprising departure from Oklahoma State, former Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy is heading back into the Big 12 spotlight.

According to On3, Gundy will join TNT Sports and HBO Max’s college football coverage this weekend as a guest analyst, marking one of his most notable television appearances since leaving the sidelines. The longtime Oklahoma State coach is set to make his debut during the network’s coverage of Arizona’s road trip to West Virginia in Week 6 of the college football season.

For Big 12 fans, Gundy’s return to the public eye should draw plenty of interest.

Mike Gundy’s Oklahoma State Tenure

Few coaches were more synonymous with the conference over the last two decades than Gundy. After taking over at Oklahoma State in 2005, he transformed the Cowboys into one of the Big 12’s most consistent programs, compiling a 170-90 record, winning the 2011 Big 12 championship, and leading OSU to 18 consecutive winning seasons and bowl appearances. Along the way, Gundy coached some of the biggest stars in program history and became the winningest coach the Cowboys have ever had.

While Gundy has made occasional television appearances in recent years, including work with ESPN’s Coaches Film Room broadcasts, this role will place him back in front of a national audience and, notably, in the middle of a Big 12 game broadcast. Reports indicate he will join the studio crew for pregame, halftime, and postgame coverage from Atlanta.

Naturally, many fans will be curious to hear Gundy’s perspective on the current state of the conference he helped shape for more than 20 years. With programs like BYU, Baylor, Texas Tech, Houston, Arizona, and Utah battling for positioning in the Big 12 race, there will be no shortage of storylines for the veteran coach to discuss.

Whether this turns into a larger television opportunity remains to be seen. But for at least one weekend, one of the most recognizable figures in modern Big 12 football will once again have a prominent seat at the table.
