Former TCU star quarterback Trevone Boykin believes it may be time for the Horned Frogs to move on from head coach Sonny Dykes.
Boykin, who starred at TCU under legendary head coach Gary Patterson, weighed in on Dykes’ future Sunday after the Fort Worth Star-Telegram published a column questioning whether TCU will retain its head coach beyond this season.
“I like Sonny as a person but I think the whole Fort Worth ready for him to slide out that seat,” Boykin wrote on X. “SMU feels like a better program now over TCU and That never happen under GMFP.”
“GMFP” is a reference to Gary Patterson, who coached TCU from 2000 through the 2021 season and helped turn the Horned Frogs into a nationally relevant program.
Boykin’s comments come at a time when pressure is mounting on Dykes despite TCU’s 22-16 comeback victory over Kansas on Saturday.
The Horned Frogs trailed the Jayhawks 13-0 at halftime before rallying in the second half, but the frustration inside Amon G. Carter Stadium was obvious. “Fire Sonny” chants could be heard during the game, while some TCU fans wore paper bags over their heads.
TCU improved to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in Big 12 play with the victory, but the season has fallen well short of expectations.
Dykes led TCU to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game during his first season in 2022 and followed a 5-7 campaign in 2023 with consecutive 9-4 seasons in 2024 and 2025.
TCU even signed Dykes to a multi-year contract extension this past April.
But the Horned Frogs’ struggles in 2026 have created increasing questions about the direction of the program. TCU already fired offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator A.J. Ricker following its Week 8 loss to West Virginia.
Now one of the most prominent former players of the Patterson era is publicly questioning whether it’s time for TCU to make an even bigger change.
Next up for TCU is a road trip to play No. 24 Arizona on Friday night.
