The Iowa State Cyclones essentially clinched a spot in the Big 12 Championship game on Saturday. They beat the Texas Longhorns on the road 23-20 in a game that they didn’t lead until the final two minutes.
Head coach Matt Campbell is now in his fifth year with the program and has continued the upward trajectory in a way no one ever expected a coach to be able to.
After the win, Campbell was talking with ABC on the sidelines and choked up talking about this season and senior class, saying, “Our senior class, our coaches, we’ve all been together, it’s been a long road. So it’s been a great joy.”
When asked about why he was getting emotional, Campbell added, “We just got great kids here. It’s not easy, but they’ve done a great job.”
Here is the video of the exchange.
What Campbell has done at Iowa State is on the verge of being unprecedented as he tries to lead the Cyclones to their first conference title since 1908.
Campbell went 3-9 in his first season in 2016. He followed that up with two 8-5 seasons, followed by a 7-6 campaign last year, and right now Iowa State is 7-2 on the year.
Iowa State wraps up the regular season against the West Virginia Mountaineers next week.
