The Texas Tech Red Raiders absorbed their first loss of the season, falling to Providence, 72-68, in the first game of the Big 12-Big East Battle on Wednesday night.
The Red Raiders (6-1) cut Providence’s lead to one point, 69-68, with a 3-pointer by Terrence Shannon Jr., with one minute left. The Red Raiders had a chance to take the lead with 24 seconds left, but Shannon’s 3-pointer failed to fall. The Friars made three free throws in the final 24 seconds to end up sealing the victory.
The Red Raiders fought foul trouble all night, as both Kevin McCullar and Bryson Williams fouled out. McCullar finished with 10 points.
Shannon led Texas Tech with 17 points, while Kevin Obanor added 12 points.
Aljami Durham led the Friars with 23 points, including a 12-for-13 night from the free-throw line. A.J. Reeves added 14 points and Ed Croswell scored 11 points.
Texas Tech was up 30-28 at the break. Of particular note for Tech was that both Shannon and Williams had three fouls at halftime. McCullar ended up with four fouls early in the second half.
Texas Tech faces Tennessee in the Jimmy V Classic next Tuesday in New York City.
