Kansas, Texas Tech Lead Way in Big 12 Men’s Basketball Power Rankings

NCAA Basketball: West Virginia at Kansas

The Kansas Jayhawks are No. 1 in the Heartland College Sports Big 12 men’s basketball power rankings after Week 11 of the 2021-22 season.

We start this week with a big game between our No. 1 and No. 2 teams at 8 p.m.

Our Power Rankings will appear every Monday.

1. KANSAS (16-2, 5-1) (Last Week: 1)

Kansas won both games last week, but Kansas State made the Jayhawks come back from a 16-point first-half deficit. Ochai Agbaji looks every bit the part of an All-American. And I think David McCormack has FINALLY gotten the message. But I’ve thought that before.

2. TEXAS TECH (15-4, 5-2) (Last Week: 2)

The Red Raiders beat Iowa State and West Virginia at home last week. The defense is stellar. The offense is balanced and now Terrence Shannon Jr. is back to scoring points (23 against WVU). Now, they go to Lawrence with a full cast to face the Jayhawks. The biggest game of the conference season … so far.

3. BAYLOR (17-2, 5-2 in Big 12) (Last Week: 4)

Welcome back, Bears. I told you last week not to worry about these guys, as the Bears won road games at West Virginia and Oklahoma. Now, worry a bit about James Akinjo, who appeared to reinjure his tailbone on Saturday.

4. TCU (13-3, 3-2 in Big 12) (Last Week: 5)

The Horned Frogs are a blown lead against Oklahoma State away from being the league’s other one-loss team. But that road win at Iowa State was huge for the Horned Frogs. So is the rise of Damion Baugh, who scored 23 points against ISU.

5. IOWA STATE (14-5, 2-5) (Last Week: 3)

The Cyclones’ offensive issues are glaring. Their only consistent offensive weapon right now is Izaiah Brockington. Thank goodness for the defense, but it can only do so much. And it couldn’t slow down Texas Tech or TCU last week.

6. TEXAS (14-5, 4-3) (Last Week: 8)

Texas takes a two-spot jump, but I’m not excited about it. The Longhorns have lost two of their last three games, and their offense is incredibly inconsistent. That Oklahoma State win is the only thing keeping them from falling.

7. KANSAS STATE (10-8, 2-5) (Last Week: 9)

You know what? The Wildcats are playing some great basketball right now. This team is playing its butts off for Bruce Weber. Nijel Pack had the game of his life on Saturday, and the Wildcats were seconds away from winning a third straight game over a ranked team for the first time in program history.

8. OKLAHOMA STATE (10-8, 3-4) (Last Week: 7)

The Cowboys drop a spot, but the differentiator here is that Kansas State beat Texas in Austin and Oklahoma State did not. Unlike the two teams below the Cowboys, at least they won a game this week, beating TCU.

9. WEST VIRGINIA (13-5, 2-4) (Last Week: 10)

The Mountaineers have now lost three straight games. At least their losses this week were to Baylor and Texas Tech. Malik Curry is giving the Mountaineers a third outside scorer. They could also use more games like the one they got from Pauly Paulicap against Tech.

10. OKLAHOMA (12-7, 2-5) (Last Week: 6)

The Sooners have to bring up the rear this week. They’ve lost four straight games, including Saturday’s game to Baylor. Tanner Groves is in a bit of a slump right now. So is this team. But the Big 12 has a way of doing that to you. The Sooners play the Mountaineers this week, so someone is going to break their losing streak.
