Ashley Joens is Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of Week
Iowa State guard/forward Ashley Joens is the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the 15th week of the 2022-23 season.
Joens’ teammate, guard Denae Fritz is the Big 12 Freshman of the Week.
This is Joens’ 13th career Player of the Week selection, the second-most in Big 12 history, behind Brittney Griner (Baylor). Fritz won her second freshman of the week award this season.
The pair powered Iowa State to wins over Texas and Baylor last week.
Joens averaged 25.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and two steals last week. She had a game-high 24 points with eight rebounds and a pair of steals in ISU’s 66-61 win over Texas on Monday.
She added a double-double Saturday at Baylor, scoring 27 points with 11 rebounds and four assists in the 81-77 double-overtime win.
In the game, she passed Andrea Riley (Oklahoma State) for second on the Big 12’s all-time career scoring list, increasing her total to 2,860 points.
Fritz averaged 11 points and seven rebounds while shooting 55.6 percent from the 3-point line.
She gave Iowa State its decisive lead with a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left against Texas, as she finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. She played 45 minutes against Baylor, hitting three 3-pointers and scoring 12 points with seven rebounds.
