UCF Head Coach Gus Malzahn Taking Back ‘Some’ Play Calling Duties in 2024

NCAA Football: Villanova at Central Florida

While the UCF Knights may have had a hard time adjusting to life in the Big 12 Conference in 2023, Gus Malzahn is laying the groundwork to change the formula in 2024.

In addition to success in the transfer portal, according to a report from the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel, Gus Malzahn will be taking back a portion of the playcalling duties in a three-man rotation with co-offensive coordinators Tim Harris Jr. and Darin Hinshaw.

UCF’s offensive attack was actually one of the best units in the Big 12 in 2023 despite the team finishing with an overall record of 6-7.

The Knights’ offense finished off the season averaging 487 yards of total offense per game (second), 258.8 passing yards per game (sixth), 228.2 rushing yards per game (second), and 31.3 points per game in 2023 (seventh).

While the team will face an uphill battle in 2024 with a new quarterback under center, the team hit the transfer portal hard on offense bringing in players like Arkansas QB KJ Jefferson, Cincinnati RB Myles Montgomery, Samford’s Jabari Brooks, and more.

Despite the college football season still being the better part of eight months away, Gus Malzahn’s squad is set to kick off the 2024 season on Thursday, August 29th against the New Hampshire Wildcats.
