When BYU center Aly Khalifa entered his name into the transfer portal under the do-not-contact tag, many expected him to follow his former head coach, Mark Pope, to Kentucky.

Khalifa listed the Wildcats as one of three potential landing spots in the portal on Sunday, alongside Louisville and a return to BYU.

The junior big man was a solid piece of the Cougars’ offense in 2023-24, averaging 5.7 points, 4.0 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game in his third season of college basketball. While a return to the Cougars is not out of the question, the team will likely have to find their next head coach quickly in order to maintain a relationship with Khalifa.

Coming out of high school in the Class of 2020, Khalifa was listed as a three-star prospect by the 247Sports index. He also checked in as the 60th-ranked player at his position and the top-ranked player in Australia (NBA Global Academy).

With multiple members of BYU’s team electing to transfer in search of greener pastures, BYU’s new coach will head to Provo with multiple new spots to fill this offseason. Still, an opportunity to bring Khalifa back for his senior season still provides some optimism among fans.
