The West Virginia Mountaineers are led by a new coach as they put together their schedule for the men’s basketball season in 2024-25.
Darian DeVries takes over the program from interim coach Josh Eilert, who was pressed into service after long-time coach Bob Huggins and the program parted ways last summer after a couple of off-court incidents.
West Virginia went 9-23 under Eilert and athletic director Wren Baker turned to DeVries to lead the program. Eilert is now an assistant coach at Utah.
DeVries is one of the game’s rising stars as a coach. In six seasons at Drake he won 150 games and led the Bulldogs to the NCAA tournament each of the last two seasons. They’re hoping that by hiring the 49-year-old they’re tapping into a coach who’s willing to be in Morgantown for the long haul and get the Mountaineers back to the Final Four.
WVU will play one non-conference tournament at a great destination — the Battle 4 Atlantis at Paradise Island in the Bahamas.
West Virginia’s schedule features 11 non-conference games and 20 Big 12 games, the latter being the first time the conference has fielded a 20-game league schedule.
That schedule will take place over 10 weeks with no break, meaning by the time the Mountaineers get to their first Big 12 Tournament in March in Kansas City, they will have played two games a week for more than two months.
The Big 12 Tournament will be held March 11-15 at T-Mobile Arena and all 16 teams will participate. The exact format of the bracket will be announced at a later date.
