Florida Atlantic Athletic Director Brian White announced on Monday that Tom Herman is no longer the head football coach at FAU, firing him after just two seasons of leading the Owls.
Herman and the Owls had lost five straight games leading up to the decision, including losses by 14 or more points in three of their last four and an 18-15 overtime loss to Temple (3-7) on Saturday.
“I extend my appreciation to Tom Herman for his dedication to our university and our student-athletes,” said White. “I informed Tom of my decision this morning and then met with the staff and team. We firmly believe in our ability to win championships and compete for bowl games, and that remains our standard.
“A national search begins immediately. With the integrity of the search in mind, I will have no further public comment until the announcement of the Owls’ next head football coach.”
Herman, 49, led the Owls to a 6-16 overall record in his two seasons with the program, and was 2-8 in his first 10 games of this season. With his firing, Herman will be due just over $4 million for the Owls to buyout his contract.
The former Texas head coach collected a buyout of ~$15 million back in 2020 when he was fired at Texas with a 32-18 overall record in Austin. Prior to taking the job with FAU, Herman served as an analyst at CBS Sports.
