Watch: Rich Rodriguez Gets Emotional After Backyard Brawl Upset

NCAA Football: Pittsburgh at West Virginia

Following West Virginia‘s upset of Pittsburgh in the Backyard Brawl on Saturday, an emotional Rich Rodriguez was immediately approached for an interview at midfield, and was clearly emotional in his first game back in the rivalry in nearly two decades.

The Mountaineers won the game in overtime 31-24 on Saturday in Morgantown. And after the game, Rodriguez was asked, “How do you describe your emotions right now?”

Rodriguez said, “I’m so happy for our kids, the state of West Virginia. We got a lot of grit. We got a lot of hard-working people. Don’t ever quit. Don’t ever quit. West Virginia Mountaineers don’t ever quit.”

Rich Rodriguez was then asked, “What made the difference?” He answered, “Just kept playing. The longer the game is going to go, the better for West Virginia. God bless the Mountaineers! And God bless West Virginia!”

The Mountaineers are now 2-1 on the season after losing to Ohio last week. This is a bounce-back win for WVU after losing the Backyard Brawl last year 38-34 in Neal Brown’s final season as head coach. The last time Rodriguez was on the sidelines in this game, his Mountaineers lost 13-9 to Pitt back in 2007.

But now, WVU is back in the win column and gets ready for conference play starting next week on the road against the Kansas Jayhawks.
