Oklahoma State is getting a boost at quarterback, as interim head coach Doug Meacham recently told media that Hauss Hejny is expected to return within the next few weeks.
Hejny, a transfer quarterback from TCU, suffered a broken right foot in the season opener against UT Martin. Meacham offered optimism about his timeline, noting that Hejny should be walking, doing light activity, and working toward a return soon. In his brief outing before the injury, Hejny completed 5 of 10 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, and added 27 rushing yards and another score on four carries.
The Cowboys have leaned on freshman quarterback Zane Flores during Hejny’s absence. Flores has attempted 79 passes, completing 45 for 417 yards and two interceptions, and also chipped in with his first career rushing touchdown. With Baylor looming as Meacham’s first game at the helm, the timeline of Hejny’s return has immediate implications for OSU’s offensive continuity.
For Oklahoma State, the potential return of Hejny offers several advantages. First, it would stabilize the quarterback room midway through a transitional season. Hejny’s early flashes showed he has dual-threat upside, and reintegrating him gives the staff a clearer path forward. Second, having a healthy starter returning from injury can boost morale and give the offense confidence as the season progresses. Finally, Hejny’s return gives Meacham and the staff more flexibility in game planning. If they can get touches back to the quarterback who arrived with high expectations, it lifts some burden off younger or backup options.
Still, uncertainty remains. Returning “in the next few weeks” is a broad window, and trainers will need to manage risk with surgical precision. There is always the possibility of setbacks or cautious ramping up. Moreover, Hejny will need to recapture in-game rhythm after time away, and the staff must balance reps to avoid overexposure too soon.
As Oklahoma State navigates a season marked by coaching change and unanswered questions, Hejny’s return could mark a turning point. If he can step back into the fold soon and at full strength, it gives the Cowboys a chance to stabilize in Big 12 play and preserve the offensive identity they envisioned when bringing him in from TCU. But much will depend on how smoothly that process goes.
