Kansas head coach Bill Self was ejected minutes into the game against Arizona State on Tuesday night. Self was upset over this foul call against Darryn Peterson that ended up with the head coach losing his cool, picking up two technical fouls and getting thrown out.
Here’s what it looked like.
Self may have just been trying to give his guys as spark as they wrap up the Arizona swing, where they lost to the Wildcats on Saturday by 23 points. But the spark never came, as Kansas lost 70-60 to the Sun Devils.
After the game, Self said, “That was a pretty temperamental crew tonight. But that didn’t cost us.” Self added, “I wasn’t told anything. They threw me out before they even said anything. But I’d have to watch it. That was probably not a great call. I came out of the box and he gave me a T, which is fine. But Sirmons, by no means did I do anything that deserved a second T. But that’s those guys for you. He told me to get back in the box and I didn’t get back in there quick enough. So that’s on me. But certainly disappointed.”
It was the second time Self had been ejected from a game over the past three seasons after he was thrown out of a road game against Texas Tech on Feb. 12, 2024. Jacque Vaughn took over as the acting head coach for the remainder of the ASU game.
Kansas’ March Madness Prospects
No. 14 Kansas is trying to find its footing ahead of the NCAA Tournament, with Selection Sunday less than two weeks away. There’s no doubt this team can make a run in March, but they also could end up as a first-round ouster. You just don’t know what you’re getting with this team on a given night, which will make them hard to predict come March Madness.
Joe Lunardi’s latest Bracketology had the Jayhawks as a No. 3 seed, but if the season unravels down the stretch, they could still drop to the 4-line.
Kansas wraps up the regular season on Saturday with a home game against the Kansas State Wildcats to close out the regular season, before going to Kansas City for the Big 12 Tournament next week.
