Robert Griffin III wants to be Baylor’s next head football coach.

The Baylor legend and 2011 Heisman Trophy winner appeared on The Dan Patrick Show on Monday, one day after the Bears fired Dave Aranda, and made it clear that he would be interested in returning to Waco to lead his alma mater.

When Patrick asked Griffin directly whether he would be interested in the opening, Griffin responded, “Yes, 100%.”

“If Baylor wants to get back to winning and have a university that isn’t just respectable on the football field, but one the fans can be proud of, they need people who know what it looks like to win at Baylor,” Griffin said.

Griffin then reiterated that he would “100%” be interested in the position and revealed that he has already spoken with Baylor athletic director Doug McNamee.

Robert Griffin III Makes His Pitch to Baylor

Few players are more closely associated with Baylor football than Griffin.

He played for the Bears from 2008-11 and helped change the trajectory of the program, culminating with his historic 2011 season. Griffin threw for 4,293 yards and 37 touchdowns that year while leading Baylor to a 10-3 record and an Alamo Bowl victory. He became the first Heisman Trophy winner in Baylor history before being selected No. 2 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft.

There would, however, be an obvious question surrounding Griffin’s candidacy: He has never coached at the college or professional level.

Griffin has instead moved into broadcasting following his NFL career and currently works as a college football analyst for FOX.

Who Does RGIII Think Baylor Should Hire?

Griffin didn’t only nominate himself for the job.

He also mentioned Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson and UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor as coaches he would advocate for Baylor to consider. Griffin called USC head coach Lincoln Riley a “dark horse” candidate for the opening.

Baylor fired Aranda on Sunday following the Bears’ 25-24 loss to Kansas. Aranda finished his Baylor tenure with a 40-40 record.

Now, one of the greatest players in program history has officially thrown his hat into the ring to replace him.
