Is Alex Delton Taking the Lead in the TCU QB Race?

NCAA Football: Cactus Bowl-Kansas State vs UCLA

With less than three weeks to go until the Big 12 football season gets underway, there are still quarterback battles to be worked out in places like Fort Worth and Stillwater. At TCU, Gary Patterson went into fall camp with a six-man quarterback race.

Well this weekend, Patterson may have hinted which direction he’s leaning with some high praise for Kansas State transfer Alex Delton, telling Horned Frog Blitz on Saturday, “You got a guy that was voted captain at Kansas State. His teammates that were at media days talked well about him. You have a guy that left the program and you think maybe somebody would have something bad to say but nobody had anything bad to say. He’s been unbelievable here.”

I’m not shocked that Delton is impressing in camp. I covered Delton after a couple of tough losses during his time at Kansas State and he always handled things like a professional. But I’m surprised his leadership might be enough to get him the starting job in Fort Worth.

My money was on the true freshman, Max Duggan, because Patterson spoke very highly of him at Big 12 Media Days, and when I asked him, he told me that because Duggan enrolled early, he doesn’t view him as a freshman. OK, then. Mike Collins played last year, but he was generally uninspiring and limited at the position, while Justin Rogers has all the hype, but the 2017 high school injury still appears to be hampering him.

As for Delton, he is not a great passer, which was evident at Kansas State, and that may be tough for an offense run by Sonny Cumbie. However, TCU’s strength on offense is it’s running backs and offensive line, so maybe Patterson and Meacham are looking at Delton as the facilitator the offense needs to be “good enough” to win games.

Regardless, Patterson hilariously said at Media Days,  “I would handicap [the quarterback race] like my golf game. I wouldn’t handicap my golf game, to be honest start at the end of April and play into May and then we start camps.”

Well, Gary’s golf game must be even more erratic than I originally expected, because this quarterback race has already gone in a couple different directions and there is still 20 days until the season starts.
